Using this data
Last updated October 17, 2026
The short version
The county numbers, maps and share images on County Heatmap are free to use, including in articles, posts, research, classes and your own projects. Please credit countyheatmap.com and, where you can, the original source named in each metric's ⓘ and on every share image.
Where the numbers come from
Almost everything comes from U.S. government agencies (the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, NOAA, CDC, CMS, FEMA, the Department of Education and others). Their data is in the public domain. County Heatmap combines it, fills in county boundaries that changed, and puts it on one map; the full list is under About → Sources on the map.
Sources with their own terms
A few sources ask for credit of their own or set conditions. If you reuse numbers from these metrics, follow their terms too:
- OpenStreetMap (golf courses, trails, greenways and bike paths): © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.
- County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (several health, safety and education measures): credit County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
- Stanford Education Data Archive (test scores): credit SEDA, Stanford University, and see its terms of use.
- PRISM Climate Group, Oregon State University (July highs, January lows, rain): credit the PRISM Climate Group.
- Tax Foundation (state tax rates): credit the Tax Foundation.
No guarantees
The numbers are estimates from their sources and can contain errors or be out of date. Each metric's ⓘ gives its source and year, and maps note their caveats. Please check anything important against the original source before relying on it.
